Pepper is a true street artist in the purist sense. He’s known to some by his altar ego; “the Mayor of Skid Row”, and he’s proud to proclaim that he’s the last homeless person on the forefront of downtown LA’s gentrification. He lives on Santa Fe Ave. where years ago a large tent city used to be, the last holdout.
When I was younger and creeping around downtown, I would notice these colorful, bold, and scrappy art instillations. Pepper has a habit of decorating his immediate surroundings, wherever that might be, with multi-colored paint splats, piled on discarded toys, and other purposefully arranged found objects. You can frequently catch him running around the city with his red shopping cart full of freshly discarded trinkets.
The print “Pepper’s World”, and the mural I painted on 7th and Mateo that it inspired, is in homage to his existence. I have enormous respect for those who can survive in such extreme conditions yet still be able to express themselves creatively…….

Flag 2010 edition sold out, THANK YOU!
I just want to thank everyone for their interest in this edition. I appreciate the support and I look forwards to creating more work. I have been receiving some touching emails, specifically from those who are affected by Epilepsy. I will to continue to shed some light on our predicament on the state of health care in this country through my art. As long as I live I will be a representative of the graffiti art culture and I hope to push further into the veins of Art History with the help of my Friends, Family and people like you who believe in what we do.

arrestedmotion.com- Behind the Scenes: Saber x Modern Multiples – Flag Print

By sleepboy
Many of you may remember the video that Saber produced for the “Organizing For America’s Health Care Reform Video Challenge” (if not, take a look after the jump). Although he was demonized by some of the media for “defacing” the American flag, anyone with a little common sense would see his painting as an “interpretation of the American flag being overwhelmed by the language of his personal struggle with our country’s system of medical care.” Battling epilepsy himself, the graffiti artist felt he had to get involved in the country’s debate on such a personal topic.
Taking it a step further, Saber is collaborating with Modern Multiples (who we visited in November), on what looks to be a 8-10 color screenprint. Take a look at some behind the scenes images after the jump…
