The film and television industry have co-opted, used, sampled, taken, stolen, and destroyed Graffiti and Street Art murals for decades. Here is a perfect example of how some people in the industry have no respect or regard for public art. Unless it serves the immediate purpose of enhancing the vision, then they have no problem plowing through neighborhoods, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. I don’t have a problem with advertisements, television, or film productions, but when artists work is so blatantly disrespected, then what are we supposed to do to protect OUR investment? What is more viable to the community, public art instillation like murals, or TV- You Decide…

Kurt Sutter, director of Son’s Of Anarchy, has responded claiming his “brand/production” was not involved with the destruction of Zes, Push, and Ugler’s mural. If this is so then I have NO problem issuing him a public apology. As of now, it’s just another public art mural destroyed by Hollywood……

Read LA Weekly’s coverage of this story HERE

Zes, aka Zeser, aka Zes AWR/MSK, is a Los Angeles graffiti artist with a feral stare that you might only notice in serial killers or creative geniuses. He has been one of L.A.’s most prolific taggers for many years. If you look up every now and again, you may have noticed his burners in back alleys or on the ledges of buildings in Echo Park, but until very recently, you wouldn’t see his work in a gallery. And, if he had had his way, you weren’t going to………

I am honored to be in this issue with other amazing artists from all over the world that focuses on global public art. Revok and I have a conversation on some of the challenges and triumphs that play themselves out in the current climate of uncertainty and political misfortunes created by corrupt officials here in my native city of Los Angeles.

The May 2012 issue of Juxtapoz is our special examination on the state of Public Art in 2012. We have spent over a year discussing the topic of community service and Public Art programs with festival organizers, politicians in the US and abroad, and artists about their experiences developing Public Art initiatives and bodies of work, and how their experiences can be blueprints for other artists and cities to follow to better communities around the world. This issue is what we learned.

Morgan talks a little about his ‘New Blood’:
“I’m a massive art collector who, by way of my habit formed a relationship with Thinkspace’s Andrew Hosner, and when he offered me the opportunity to curate a show I jumped at the chance. The concept of the show is how the torch is passed from one artist to the next. One opens the door so another can follow. And this show is all about artists who I think have and are continuing to impact and change the art world, and each one of these artists is bringing along an ‘apprentice’ or ‘protege’ who they think we all need to know about, the artists they believe are the ‘New Blood’ of the art world.”
